PROTECTED MEMBRANE ROOF SYSTEMS |
Protected membrane roofing's breakthrough contribution to flat roof technology was the incorporation of an "upside-down" approach to insulating the roof: placing the insulation on top of the waterproof membrane to improve the membrane's effectiveness and the insulation's efficiency. This advancement was made possible in large part by the use of STYROFOAM* extruded polystyrene insulation, whose closed-cell, water-resistant qualities have proven to be a key component in PMR systems. STYROFOAM* extruded polystyrene insulation is installed beneath fabric and ballast, concrete paver ballast, or garden roof systems and above the waterproofing membrane. It helps keep the membrane at a constant temperature and minimizes the harmful effects of freeze-thaw cycling, ultra-violet degradation and mechanical damage, the most causes of premature roof failure. Thermal warranties are available from Dow and full system warranties are available from various membrane manufacturers. PMR roof assemblies offer a number of advantages. They also help building owners meet the goal of sustainable construction including contributing to the achievement of LEEDTM points.
